Hutto is a city in Williamson County, Texas, located in the eastern part of the county within the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area, about 25 miles northeast of downtown Austin. Home to roughly 28,000 residents, it has grown from a small railroad and farming community into one of the region's expanding suburban cities.
The city's defining feature is its unusual mascot. According to the best-known local legend, a circus train stopped in Hutto in 1915, and during the stop a hippopotamus escaped into nearby Cottonwood Creek. The story captured the community's imagination, and the local schools soon adopted the hippo as their mascot—by 1923 it was already appearing on Hutto High School graduation materials. Today the entire school system is known as "Hippo Nation," and the hippo remains a source of civic pride woven into the city's identity.
Hutto's modern role is shaped by its position on the State Highway 130 toll road and U.S. Highway 79, which together connect the city to Round Rock, Pflugerville, Georgetown, and Austin. This access has driven substantial residential growth, with new subdivisions filling the city's footprint around parks, schools, and retail centers. Public education is provided by Hutto Independent School District, which serves roughly 10,000 students, and the city hosts the Eastern Williamson County Higher Education Center, a partnership offering college coursework.
Recreation centers on the city's parks, including Hutto Lake Park with its lake, mile-long trail, fishing, and kayaking, and Hutto Community Park.
