Lake Somerville Gateway Town
Welcome to Somerville, a small Burleson County city on the doorstep of Lake Somerville and its state park and trailway.
Somerville is a city in Burleson County, Texas, in east-central Texas. With a population of about 1,300, it is best known as the gateway to Lake Somerville, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir that anchors outdoor recreation across the region. The city's history reaches back to the late nineteenth century, when the community was established around 1883. For most of its first century it was a small farming and ranching town, and the arrival of Lake Somerville in the 1960s gradually added recreation and tourism to its traditional agricultural base. The lake's story begins in the mid-twentieth century, when the Corps began building Somerville Dam in 1962 and completed it in 1967. The reservoir that followed gave the surrounding ranch country a new recreational anchor, and the city of Somerville became its primary access point. Lake Somerville State Park and Trailway, leased from the Corps and opened in 1970, now protects about 8,700 acres across the Birch Creek and Nails Creek units, linked by a 26-mile trailway for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Somerville's character is that of a small, unhurried Central Texas town. The city is served by Somerville ISD, which operates the community's public schools, and its everyday life centers on local businesses, churches, and the lake that lies just outside town. Residents and visitors alike are drawn to the water for boating, fishing, camping, and swimming, and the trailway draws hikers and mountain bikers to the surrounding woods and shoreline. Today the lake and its state park are the town's best-known features, drawing visitors from College Station, Houston, and Austin. The community suits people who want a quiet, affordable small-town setting with a major outdoor amenity at the door. Its position in Burleson County also places it within reach of the Bryan–College Station area for employment, higher education, and medical care, giving residents a balance of rural calm and regional convenience.
