Rural Community in Caldwell County

Apartments in Dale, TX

Welcome to Dale, a quiet Caldwell County crossroads seven miles northeast of Lockhart, set among farmland near the barbecue and state-park attractions of the Lockhart area.

Dale is a small unincorporated community in Caldwell County, Texas, on Farm Road 1854 about seven miles northeast of Lockhart. It sits in a rural stretch of the Texas Blackland Prairie between Austin and San Antonio, within an easy drive of both metropolitan areas but far enough out to keep a quiet, agricultural character. The community traces its origins to the railroad. A post office was established in 1880, the year the Missouri, Kansas and Texas line built through the area, and Dale — named for the valley in which it is located — grew into a small shipping point for the surrounding farms. By the early 1900s it had a steam gristmill and cotton gin, shipped cotton, and supported a local school with more than a hundred pupils. Its population rose and fell with the fortunes of rural agriculture through the twentieth century, settling into the small crossroads community it is today, with a few hundred residents. Dale has no incorporated municipal government, so it relies on Caldwell County services and on nearby Lockhart, the county seat, for shopping, dining, and civic needs. The Dale Community Center is a local gathering place, hosting events such as summer day camps and singer-songwriter shows that benefit area causes. The community's greatest assets are its rural setting and its location. Lockhart, seven miles southwest, is widely known as the barbecue capital of Texas and offers historic courthouse-square character, while Lockhart State Park provides a nine-hole golf course, trails, a swimming pool, and camping just outside town. Austin lies to the north and San Antonio to the south, each reachable by nearby highways. Dale suits residents who want country living with convenient access to Lockhart and the larger cities of Central Texas. Its farmland, scattered homes, and small-acreage properties define a lifestyle built around space and quiet, with the amenities of the Austin-San Antonio corridor close at hand.
