Barbecue Capital of Texas

Apartments in Lockhart, TX

Welcome to Lockhart, the Caldwell County seat known as the Barbecue Capital of Texas, with a historic courthouse square south of Austin.

Lockhart is a city in Caldwell County, Texas, and the county seat, located about 30 miles south of Austin along the State Highway 130 corridor. Founded in the mid-nineteenth century, it developed as an agricultural and trade center on the historic Chisholm Trail, the cattle-drive route that ran from Texas to Kansas. That trail heritage seeded Lockhart's defining institution: the meat markets that cooked day-old beef into barbecue, giving rise to the smokehouse tradition for which the city is known worldwide. Lockhart's status as the 'Barbecue Capital of Texas' is official, recognized by the Texas Legislature. Legendary establishments such as Black's Barbecue, Kreuz Market, and Smitty's Market, plus newer names including Chisholm Trail B.B.Q. and Barbs B Q, anchor a dining scene that draws visitors from across the state and beyond. Black's traces its roots to one of the oldest continuously family-owned barbecue joints in Texas. The city's compact center is built around the Caldwell County Courthouse, and the courthouse and several downtown blocks were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The restored square now mixes historic storefronts with restaurants, shops, live music, and a growing arts presence. The annual Chisholm Trail Roundup, held each June, celebrates the town's cattle-trail past with a parade, cook-offs, and entertainment. Lockhart's population is roughly 14,000, and the city has become an outer commuter town as Austin expands southward. State Highway 130 provides a direct route to Southeast Austin, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, and eastern employment nodes, while downtown San Antonio lies about an hour away. New-home communities have risen around the historic core. The result is a community that balances deep Texas history and small-town character with the pull of the expanding Austin metropolitan area.
