Historic Washington County Town

Listings in Chappell Hill, TX

Welcome to Chappell Hill, a storied Washington County town in the heart of the Stephen F. Austin colony, known for wildflowers, history, and rolling countryside between Houston and Austin.

Chappell Hill is an unincorporated community in the eastern portion of Washington County, Texas, set within Stephen F. Austin's original colony on some of the oldest Anglo-settled land in the state. Located near Brenham and within the greater Houston metropolitan area, the town sits between Austin and Houston and is closely associated with the rolling, wildflower-covered countryside of the Brazos Valley region. Its population is roughly 600, a figure that swells dramatically each spring when visitors arrive for the town's signature event. The community's history is deep. Settled in the early nineteenth century, Chappell Hill grew into a commercial and educational center, and between 1853 and 1909 it sent seven state representatives to Austin, including two African Americans. The Grange movement, temperance societies, and other civic institutions flourished here in the late nineteenth century, and the town's restored churches, buildings, and cemeteries—including a Masonic Cemetery holding graves of Republic of Texas settlers and Confederate veterans—preserve that layered past. Today Chappell Hill is best known for the Official Texas Bluebonnet Festival, hosted by the Chappell Hill Historical Society each April on Main Street. What began as a small antique festival has become a major regional draw, celebrating the state flower with live music, hundreds of juried arts and crafts vendors, and the surrounding wildflower landscapes. The festival anchors a tourism identity that also includes the Chappell Hill Lavender Farm and Texas Star Winery in the nearby countryside. The town appeals to those drawn to Texas history, rural living, and the quiet beauty of Washington County's pastures and flower fields. Its position near U.S. Highway 290 keeps Brenham, the county's commercial center, close at hand, while Austin and Houston remain within a manageable drive, making Chappell Hill a distinctive choice for country living with access to both of Texas's largest cities.

About Chappell Hill

Real Estate & Housing

Chappell Hill's housing market is defined by its historic and rural character. The town itself holds restored homes, some dating to the nineteenth century, along tree-lined streets and around its historic Main Street, while the surrounding countryside offers ranch properties, farmsteads, and larger country estates on generous acreage. Buyers are often drawn by the area's history, open land, and proximity to Brenham and U.S. Highway 290. The market skews toward single-family homes, historic properties, and rural acreage rather than dense subdivision development, preserving the community's low-density, pastoral quality.

Neighborhoods

Chappell Hill's core is its historic Main Street, lined with restored buildings, period homes, and landmarks that reflect the town's nineteenth-century origins as a Washington County commercial center. Around this center, residential streets and rural lanes spread into surrounding pasture and farmland, blending the town into the countryside. The community includes historic churches and cemeteries that document its long settlement history, and nearby crossroads such as the areas around the lavender farm and winery extend the town's rural reach. The overall pattern is one of a small historic core surrounded by open, working land.

Lifestyle in Chappell Hill

Life in Chappell Hill unfolds at a country pace, shaped by history, agriculture, and the rhythms of the Texas countryside. The community is small and neighborly, anchored by its churches, the historical society, and long-running local institutions. Each April the Bluebonnet Festival transforms Main Street into a gathering place for thousands of visitors, while the rest of the year the town settles back into quiet rural living. Nearby Brenham supplies everyday shopping, dining, and services, and the proximity to both Houston and Austin means residents can enjoy a pastoral home base without being cut off from the state's major cities.

Schools & Education

Getting Around

Chappell Hill is reached by the rural roads of eastern Washington County, with U.S. Highway 290 running nearby through Brenham as the region's main artery. That highway connects the area southwest toward Austin and southeast toward Houston, putting both cities within roughly an hour to an hour and a half by car. The community's rural, unincorporated layout makes a personal vehicle essential, and most day-to-day services are found in Brenham a short drive away. The location offers country living with unusually direct highway access to two of the state's major metropolitan areas.

Parks & Recreation

Recreation in Chappell Hill centers on its festivals, its countryside, and its historic sites. The Official Texas Bluebonnet Festival each April draws visitors for live music, crafts, and wildflower viewing, and the surrounding roads offer some of the region's most scenic spring drives. The Chappell Hill Lavender Farm provides a peaceful destination with fields, gardens, and local products, while Texas Star Winery adds wine tasting to the area's rural offerings. The town's historic Main Street, churches, and cemeteries reward leisurely exploration, and nearby Lake Somerville and Washington-on-the-Brazos extend outdoor and historical recreation options across the county.
