With about 5,300 residents recorded in the 2020 census, Lakehills is the most populous place in Bandera County, surpassing the county seat of Bandera. The area now known as Lakehills was long called Upper Medina Lake. County road improvements begun in the late 1930s were interrupted by World War II, and meaningful development along the lake took hold in the decades that followed. A post office substation established in the early 1960s gave the community its current name, and the population grew steadily from a few hundred in the mid-1970s to several thousand by the turn of the century. Lakehills remains an unincorporated community rather than an incorporated city, which shapes much of its character.
