Schulenburg is a city in Fayette County, Texas, set on high ground about two miles east of the Navidad River at the junction of Interstate 10 and U.S. Highway 77. It sits roughly 95 miles west of Houston, 100 miles east of San Antonio, and 80 miles southeast of Austin, making it a convenient midpoint on one of Texas's busiest east-west corridors. The population is about 2,800. The town was founded in 1873, when the Galveston, Houston and San Antonio Railway reached the area and drew German, Czech, and Austrian settlers who had been farming the surrounding countryside. It was named for landowner Louis Schulenburg and incorporated in 1875. That Central European heritage still defines the community's identity, from its churches to its food, music, and festivals. Schulenburg is best known as the Home of the Painted Churches.
