Hill Country Headwaters Community

Listings in Harper, TX

Welcome to Harper, a small Hill Country community at the Pedernales headwaters, with its own school district and ranchland just west of Fredericksburg.

Harper is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Gillespie County, Texas, in the heart of the Hill Country about 23 miles west of Fredericksburg on U.S. Highway 290. The 2020 census counted 1,332 residents. At an elevation of roughly 2,100 feet, Harper sits on the western edge of Gillespie County near the headwaters of the Pedernales River, a landscape of rolling limestone hills, live oaks, and ranchland. The area was settled beginning in 1863, when the Matthew Taylor and Eli McDonald families arrived, and the community's early years reflect the Hill Country's frontier history, including the 1864 McDonald massacre commemorated by a local historical marker. Ranching and farming shaped Harper's development, and the town remains a small, close-knit agricultural community today. Harper ISD anchors the community, serving about 590 students across elementary, middle, and high school campuses — a compact district that keeps local children close to home from pre-kindergarten through graduation. The school district is a central part of the community's identity. Life in Harper is quiet and rural. Daily errands and larger shopping are typically made in Fredericksburg to the east, Kerrville to the south, or Junction to the west, while the community itself offers the essentials. The surrounding Hill Country supports hunting, ranching, and outdoor recreation, and the Pedernales River's headwaters run through the area. The town's position on U.S. 290 places it along one of the Hill Country's main travel corridors, giving residents access to the region while preserving the community's unincorporated, small-town character. For residents and buyers, Harper offers Hill Country acreage, a small-school environment, and a genuine rural pace within about a half-hour of Fredericksburg's amenities and the region's growing tourism economy.

About Harper

Real Estate & Housing

Harper's housing and land market is rural and Hill Country in character. Properties include modest in-town homes, ranch-style houses, and larger acreage with pasture, live oaks, and creek or river frontage along the Pedernales headwaters. Much of the appeal is land — buyers seeking a few acres for livestock, hunting, or a country home. Newer construction is limited, and the stock skews older and owner-occupied. The community's unincorporated status means fewer municipal services but lighter regulation, which appeals to those wanting space and a working-ranch lifestyle.

Neighborhoods

Harper is a small crossroads community strung along U.S. Highway 290, with homes and ranch properties spreading into the surrounding hills. There are no large subdivisions; instead, the area is defined by ranchland and scattered acreage. Fredericksburg, 23 miles east, anchors the region's shopping, dining, and tourism, while Kerrville lies to the south and Junction to the west. The community's setting on the western edge of Gillespie County gives it a quieter, more remote Hill Country character than the Fredericksburg area.

Lifestyle in Harper

Life in Harper is rural, ranching-oriented, and unhurried. The school district, local churches, and community events center social life, and hunting, fishing, and working the land are common pastimes. Residents travel to Fredericksburg for dining, wineries, and shopping, and the area's tourism economy offers nearby employment and entertainment. The community's elevation and Hill Country setting give it mild winters and a landscape of live oaks and rolling hills. The pace is quiet, with a strong sense of neighborly, small-town community.

Schools & Education

Harper Independent School District serves the community with three campuses — Harper Elementary, Harper Middle, and Harper High — enrolling roughly 590 students. The district provides a complete pre-kindergarten through twelfth-grade education in a small, close-knit setting, with students attending school in the same community throughout their academic careers. Harper ISD's compact size allows for personal attention and strong community involvement, and its athletics and extracurricular programs anchor local life. Families value the ability to keep children close to home through graduation.

Getting Around

Harper sits on U.S. Highway 290, the main east-west route across the Hill Country, providing direct access to Fredericksburg 23 miles east and Junction to the west, with Interstate 10 reached via Kerrville to the south. The town is car-dependent, with most residents commuting to Fredericksburg, Kerrville, or the surrounding area for work and errands. San Antonio lies roughly 90 minutes southeast, and Austin is about two hours east, making Harper a rural base within reach of the region's larger cities.

Parks & Recreation

Recreation in Harper centers on the Hill Country outdoors. The Pedernales River headwaters and nearby creeks support fishing and swimming holes, while the surrounding ranchland offers hunting for deer, turkey, and other game. Hiking, birding, and scenic drives through the limestone hills are everyday pastimes. Fredericksburg's wineries, Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, and the region's state parks lie within a short drive, and the community's rural roads and open space make it a base for exploring the western Hill Country.
